Iglesia de San Salvador de Villar de Donas
“REVIEW IN SPANISH. ENGLISH BELOW. ENGLISH This spectacular 12th-century church is a must-visit. For pilgrims, it’s somewhat off the Camino de Santiago, but for culture-loving tourists, it’s an absolute obligation. You know that in my reviews, I always point out when there’s something unique or out of the ordinary, and in this case, the frescoes on the main altar are something unique worth seeing. These frescoes have survived to this day thanks to being covered with wax and lime, though it’s unclear whether it was to protect them from the passage of time or to put something over them. The fact is that they are now visible, and it’s not something you see every day. From what I’ve read, this type of fresco was common but rarely survives through so many centuries. In the case of this church, due to its special circumstances, they are in almost perfect condition considering their age. Be aware that the visiting hours are only in the afternoon. You need to go after 4:00 PM. The woman who takes care of the church will tell you very interesting things and she is a real charm. You will have a great time and see a unique gem. IT’S UNMISSABLE. I assure you.”
